Post of the Day

Nothing really happened today, but yesterday makes up for today. Yesterday I went to take what I thought was the pretest for my GED, but it turned out to just be an evaluation test for the GED class. The test was to grade and figure out what kind of education level I have. The test grades up to a 12th grade level, after that it is just considered 12+. Taking the test took about 2 hours, including the instructions on what to do, and the time it took to grade it. The test had two parts, and both had reading and mathematics sections. The first test determined what level test you needed to take, and the second was to figure out what level of education you had. I took the highest out of four tests for both mathematics and reading. After the test, I was told that I got a 12+. I also only missed 2 out of 25 questions on the Reading, and 8 out of 35 on the Math. The teacher said that I will be taking the acually pretest for my GED sometime in the next few weeks. After that, I will study what I missed on the pretest, and then schedule a time to take my GED. The class will start this coming Tuesday, and it will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If all goes as planned I will have my GED before Summer.

I also tested Extended some more with Adam. I will be going to an Extended PTQ this weekend in Indy. I will have to leave at, a very early, 5:00 A.M. Kurt and Jimmy are coming with me, and I think Brian might also tag along. It looks like Jimmy and me will be playing very similar decks. We are both playing UB Scepterless Tog. Kurt is going to play The Rock. And Brian is always a secret until first round. It should be a lot of fun. I hope to see you there.

Not much else is going on. There is a debate over at the cumagic forums. So until later,

Post of the Day

The prerelease went great. I got 4th place in an early bird sealed event, which gained me 9 packs. Plus, I won the first round in two more drafts, for a total of 11 packs in all. I made a lot of good deals, too. I was able to get almost all the cards I needed for RDW in extended, and 1.5. I also met a few people I know from the Indy area. We got home at around 3 in the morning, man was it a long day.

Yesterday was fun too. There were only 5 people at the type two, but I still had a fun time. I didn't do well at all, for some reason my deck refused to draw good cards. There were even two new people, and I played a couple of my 1.5 decks against them.

Tonight I will be doing a lot of Extended testing. I have a U/b Tog deck in mind. Similar to the type two days, it will have an upheaval and Force Spikes. I will see how it does. I am testing for the Extended PTQ this weekend. As far as I know, I will be taking Jimmy, Kurt, and maybe Brian. That should be a blast, and I should be able to get the last few cards I need to finish off my decks.

My report on the Extended PTQ from a few weeks ago never got finished. I kind of just forgot about it. So I will post what I did write. It is only 5 rounds out of 7, but I will post it anyway. It is right here.

Tomorrow is the day I take my pretest for the GED. It is at 9 in the morning, so I have to wake up early. Hopefully I do good on it. After I take the pretest I will study what I didn't know for 6 weeks. Then after that, I will take the final GED test. I am not really sure on my plans after that. I will probably take a few courses before summer, then do more after summer. I would most definitely like to take some programming classes. And I might like to take some writing courses to better improve my writing.

Well that is about all for now. So until later,

PTQ: Kobe in Indy

This was the first PTQ of the new extended season, and it would be a proving point for almost every deck. After the recent banning of many combo cards, including Tinker and Oath of Druids, the field was full of fresh new decks and ideas. Old classics where there, including as Tog, U/G Madness, and Red Deck Wins, as well as many new innovative decks, including Enchantress, Infinite Life, and even Affinity. To say the least, the field was very diverse.

The night before, I did a lot of testing against my friend Jimmy. We tested Tog vs. The Rock. We played about 20 games, and I won maybe 10% of them with tog. It is a very hard match up. The big creatures are very hard to deal with. I seemed pretty prepared though, I just hoped to not have to face The Rock.

I went to the tournament with three people, Adam, Jimmy, and my Dad. Registration started at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time, so we had to leave at 5:00 a.m. to get there. The car ride there most of us slept.

Once there we wrote out deck lists, and bout last minute cards. Adam was able to get for Chills for $6 at the last minute. Adam played U/G Madness, Jimmy played The Rock, my Dad played his janky U/W Orb deck, and I played Scepter Tog. We did a little testing before it started, then around 10:30 the first round started.

Round One. My first round opponent was Jason Green, playing GW Enchantress. It was an interesting deck, but with almost all combo deck, control was easy to get a lock. Game one, I drew three Scepters, the first with Counterspell, another with Fire/Ice, and the third with a wished out Terminate. I had the lock, and he just scooped because there was nothing that he could do. Game two I got out an early tog. I attacked a few times, before I was able to pump it up to 16 for the kill. He was a good sport, but game two he got really mana screwed.

After I won, I found out that Adam got a round one match loss, for illegal main deck. It turns out that he never registered the basic land in it. At least now he will always make sure to read his list before he hands it in.

1-0 2-0

Round Two. I played against Carl “Throwing Goblins” Pacel, playing U/G Madness. Games one was no fun. He got out a lot of creatures early on that I had no way to deal with. Game two was very close. I had a Scepter, with Fire/Ice, and a Tog. I was able to hold off his creatures until I got him down to 9. It came down to me top decking another Fire/Ice to tap his last creature, so that I was then able to swing for the win. Game three, I keep a really risky hand. All the cards in my hand were three casting cost, and I only had two lands. I was able to top deck another land on my third turn. I got out both togs very early on. Then was able to Intuition for three Accumulated Knowledge, which made it so I had enough cards to deal exactly 15 damage to him. He wasn’t too happy about losing, but it was a close game.

2-0 4-1

Round Three. I played against Louis Stephan, who was playing “Red Deck Wins.” He was really nice. Game one I wasn’t able to deal with his fast burn and attacking. I barely won the game, because he forgot to attack me when I was at three. Then he had no more instant burn to finish me off, when I was at 2 life. I got out a huge tog to swing for the win. Game two and three both went very much in his favor He got Tangle Wires and Slith Firewalker out. The Tangle Wire really hurt, because it denied me off all my mana. Without mana I couldn’t do anything about his attacking creatures. He was quickly able to finish me off, while I sat there helpless.

2-1 5-3

Round Four. John Rink played a very interesting affinity deck against me in round four. It was a lot like most type two builds, the only huge distinction was the addition of Tangle Wire. Affinity, I found out, is a hard match up for me. They have Frogmites, which are hard to deal with without using a lot of cards. They also play Tangle Wire which ties up my mana production, thus, disabling my ability to counter their spells. Game one, he got out a turn two Frogmite, which was very hard to take care of. He also was able to get out a Tangle wire. I was quickly killed by a Frogmite and Myr Enforcer. Game two was more of the same.

2-2 5-5

Round Five. My 5th round opponent was Gary, playing U/G Madness. Gary was really nice, and a fun opponent to play against. Game one was close, I was able to get out triple Scepter, two had Fire/Ice, and the other had Counterspell. I had a good control on the game, and then was able to get out a big Tog for the win. Game two, he got triple Rootwalla very early. I have hard times dealing with early beaters. I quickly died from the Rootwalla-beat-down. Game three, he got mana flooded pretty bad. He was able to deal some early damage, though, before I was able to stabilize and get out a Tog. Once I got the tog out, there was not much he could do. I tapped down his guys, and then swung in with my Tog. After a few small hits, I finished him off with a massive dump of cards. Gary was really nice, and I wouldn’t mind playing against him again.

3-2 7-6

Post of the Day

Hello all! I just got back from the U of I magic club. I played in a draft with three pro in it: Val, Luke, and Craig(not technically a pro, but still very good). There were 9 people, total, in it. I managed to get third, I also bout out a Chrome Mox for $10. My deck wasn't that great, but I did have a Loxodon Warhammer. It was a lot of fun.

The spoiler for Darksteel is out, two whole days before the prerelease. I will spend the next two days studying it, in hopes that I will do good at the side drafts. I haven't read the full thing yet, but from what I have seen, it looks like a pretty fun set. I have a lot of reading and memorizing to do.

The prerelease is this weekend, for those that still don't know. I will be going with my dad, Nathan, and Kurt. It should be pretty fun. While I am there, I need to get a few cards from the dealers. Good thing I have money.

Not a lot else going on. Tomorrow is D&D. Other than that, everything else has been mentioned. Well until later,

Post of the Day

My birthday went pretty successfully. I went to Indy with Tim and Kurt. We went to Don Pablos and had some really good food. Then we played at the arcade in the mall for 3 hours. It was a lot of fun. At the arcade, they had a Blitz game set up to a projector, and it was awesome. I also got some cool gifts.

Sunday I played in the type two at Dragon's Table. I got top four, and won $8.75, with my Red Deck Wins. I had a pretty fun time.

Yesterday I did a lot of testing with Nathan, Adam, and Kurt. I tested type two and extended. It was pretty fun.

This weekend is the prerelease for Darksteel. Still not a full spoiler yet, hopefully in a day or two it will get posted. I like to read through the whole thing an try to figure out what will be good in draft and sealed. I did that with Scourge and won both of the side drafts that I did. So far Nathan and Kurt are the only two coming with me. We have to leave my house at 5:30. But it should be a lot of fun.

Not a lot else happening. Going to Dragon's Table tonight to test with Adam. So until later,

Post of the Day

A few things have happened in the past 3 days. Monday was the same as always, not boring but nothing to exciting. Tuesday, I helped Adam test his new beltcher deck. I think it has a lot of potential and seems very interesting. My slide was unable to beat it, but then again I am not the greatest slide player. My affinity was able to get a quick kill, and I forget how my "Red Deck Wins" did.

Yesterday was quite interesting. It was for the final on my typing class. I ended up being one of the only people to finish the whole test/typing of 7 papers. It was also the last day that I went to school. I will be taking my pre-test for the GED on the 27th, and then after that, take a 6 week class to study what I don't know. Once that is all done, I will then take the final GED, and if I pass, will be done with school. I hopefully plan to attend Parkland after the summer. I have $2000 dollars in scholarships to use on tuition and books. Heh, who says playing magic doesn't pay off?

My birthday is this weekend, as well. I will be going to Indy with Tim and Kurt. I was originally planning to take Jimmy too, but he canceled on Tuesday because of some random scholastic Olympia crap. Oh well, it should still be a lot of fun. We will be going to Don Pablo's, which is ,in my opinion, the best Mexican food that isn't home made. After that, we will go to a music store to see if they have a rare CD that I am looking for (cKy - Vol. 2), and then after that, we shall go to the mall. The mall in Indy has a massive arcade. It is one of those that you use a card instead of tokens or coins. I won't be getting a lot for my birthday, because I am pretty content with everything that I have now, but I will be getting some cash to use when I do see something that I want. I already think I know what I want to get with it. I am wanting another hard drive for my computer, because the one I have now only has 20 gigs left. With another one I can store DVD's on it, and do video editing when I get to that stage.

In the next two weeks I will be going to Indy two more times. Once for the prerelease of Darksteel, and again for another extended PTQ. I have a good idea of what cards I am wanting from dealers. I have a big list of things that would be great in decks of mine.

Besides that, I think there is not a lot else going on. I will continue to try to remember to finish my PTQ report. And until later,

Post of the Day

This weekend has been pretty fun. Saturday, in the draft, I made top four. The top four split, so I got $14, and I also got a lot of rares. There where 10 people at the draft, and top four was: Brian, Alex, Nathan, and Me. Today was type two, and there were 6 people. We played round robin. I didn't make top two, but I had a lot of fun. I changed my "Red Deck Wins" deck to be more of a conventional build. It now has land destruction, which seems to help a lot. The land destruction helps to control the board, so that I am not just speeding to a win.

Today, I also threw together a new deck that I call "Nitroglycerin". It is my build of "Draft Affinity", which is an affinity deck based on winning by turn four at the latest. It is very unstable, and seems as though that it could easily be recked, but it is very fast if it works. It needs a lot more testing, but I have an early list built. It is extremely budget also, which is a plus. The only, and I mean only, expense is the Chrome Moxes. The basis of the deck is to get out an Atog and swing for the win. It has Frogmites and Myr Enforcers for back-up, and Disciple of the Vault is just stupid with Atog.

I still need a lot more testing with both decks. Here are the current lists for both:

"Red Deck Wins"

4x Slith Firewalker
4x Averax
4x Blistering Firecat
4x Molten Rain
4x Stone Rain
4x Misguided Rage
4x Chartooth Cougar
4x Pyrite Spellbomb
4x Goblin Charbelcher

4x Chrome Mox
4x Wooded Foothills
4x Bloodstained Mire
14x Mountain

TEMP SIDEBOARD

4x Shatter
4x Detonate
4x Sulfuric Vortex
2x Pyroclasm
1x Ensnaring Bridge

"Nitroglycerin (a.k.a. Draft Affinity)"

4x Atog
4x Disciple of the Vault
4x Shrapnel Blast
4x Frogmite
4x Myr Enforcer
4x Thoughtcast
4x Ornithopter
4x Tooth of Chiss-Goria
4x Scale of Chiss-Goria

4x Chrome Mox
4x Talisman of Indulgence
4x Seat of Synod
4x Ancient Den
4x Vault of Whispers
4x Great Furnace

Nitroglycerin does not have a board as of yet, it is still very experimental. It would probably have burn in it, or something. Maybe a card to help late game, possibly Broodstars.

Well that is it for now. I should be done with the PTQ report soon. So until then,

Post of the Day

Tonight I am going to the Dragon's Table to play some D&D. It should be fun. I have been playing a lot of modo, and just recently a lot of Battlefield 1942. Saturday I went 4-3 at the PTQ, and I am writing a report on it. Sunday I went 5-0 and drew in the top 2 of the local type two tournament. There where only 6 people, but it was still fun. I played my new "Red Deck Wins" deck, it is a lot of fun. It has become one of my new favorite decks. I am working on versions for both type two and type 1.5.

Monday was the same old Monday. I played some guillotine with Tim and Kurt. Tuesday, I tested type two with Adam. My red deck easily beat his new affinity deck. I think it is a hard match up for him when after boarding I have scepter+shatter, and 4 detonate. There is not a lot he can do.

Tomorrow is a boster draft at The Dragon's Table. I hope we get a good number of people. I am not really good at drafting, but it is still a lot of fun. Then Sunday will be another type two tournament.

Next Saturday is my birthday. I will be 16. I will be going to Indy with a few of my friends. Going to eat at a really good Mexican restaurant. After that we will go to the big mall there, which has a massive arcade. It should be a day full of fun.

I shall post again after this weekend, maybe sooner if I get my report done. So until then,

Post of the Day

Yes, I know. Again, I have not posted in over a week. It was a combination of many things. One, I have been busy playing in tournaments. Two, I have been bored. And three, it was Christmas. A lot has happened though. I got second at the mox tournament in Jacksonville, playing mono-red burn. I have also been playing computer games a lot. Mainly Magic Online and GTA: Vice City. Vice City is a great game because every thing in it is moddable. I have also gotten it to play online. A group of people took the time to mod the entire game to work online with other people. It is a lot of fun.

Tomorrow I will be going to an Extended PTQ. I shall play a tog deck that I built. I plan to do ok. I don't think I will top 8 by any means, I just hope I can win more matches than I lose. I have done a fair amount of testing with some friends. I was unable to test against goblins though, I hope that won't be a problem. I will be going with two of my friends, Adam and Jimmy. Overall it should be really fun. Maybe I will even buy a few cards for my self.

I bout Morrowind, but it seems to have problems installing. I have a few ideas on how to fix it. I will just have to see how it goes. It might come down to have to exchange it for something else, and that would suck. Or I could go through a big hassle of installing it on someone else's computer and copying the files to CD and bringing it back to my computer. Either way, it will be a hassle.

Not a lot else. I will try to do a tourny report on tomorrow. I will need to write down quick notes like card choices and the deck that they are playing. It shouldn't be too hard, it is just a lot more work not doing that. I will also try to post more often. So until later,
